What is Fibre to the Building?
Fibre to Your Building, Copper to Your Door
Fibre to the Building (FTTB) is an nbn® technology used primarily for apartment blocks and multi-dwelling units (MDUs). It involves running a fibre optic cable to the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) in your building's communications room. From there, the existing copper wiring within the building is used to connect to individual apartments or units.
How FTTB Connection Works
With FTTB, nbn® installs fibre optic cable to your building's Main Distribution Frame (MDF). This is usually located in a communications room or basement. From the MDF, the connection travels over the existing copper wiring (part of the building's internal network) to a VDSL2-compatible modem/router within your apartment or unit.
Ideal for Multi-Dwelling Units
FTTB is specifically designed to service buildings with multiple premises, like apartment blocks and office buildings.
Utilises Existing Building Wiring
Leverages the existing copper phone lines within the building, reducing the need for extensive new cabling inside units.
Fibre to the Communications Room
A fibre optic cable delivers high-speed connectivity to your building's central communications point (MDF).
VDSL2 Technology
FTTB typically uses VDSL2 technology over the final copper run, enabling good speeds and reliability.
Generally Good Speeds
Can deliver speeds up to 100Mbps download, depending on the quality and length of the in-building copper wiring.
