Frequently Asked Questions about FTTC nbn®
Get answers to common questions about Fibre to the Curb technology and our services.
What is Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)?
FTTC is an nbn® technology where fibre optic cable runs to a Distribution Point Unit (DPU) in your street, and your existing copper phone line completes the short connection to your premises.
How does FTTC differ from FTTN and FTTP?
FTTC uses a shorter copper run than FTTN (Fibre to the Node) and is less susceptible to distance issues. Unlike FTTP (Fibre to the Premises), it still uses some copper, but it's a much shorter segment.
What speeds can I get with FTTC?
FTTC supports nbn® speed tiers up to 100Mbps download and 40Mbps upload. Actual speeds depend on the quality and length of the copper line from the DPU.
Do I need new equipment for FTTC?
Yes, FTTC requires an nbn® Network Connection Device (NCD) inside your premises, which connects to your existing phone socket. Your router then connects to this NCD. We will provide the NCD to you at no charge, if there isn't already one installed.
How is FTTC installed?
An nbn® technician will install the DPU in your street (if not already present) and connect it to your existing copper line. Inside your premises, they will install a small NCD. No trenching is typically required at your property.
Can I upgrade from FTTC to FTTP?
nbn® is progressively upgrading some FTTC premises to FTTP. If your address becomes eligible, we can help you transition to the faster fibre connection.
FTTC Installation: What to Expect
Getting connected to Fibre to the Curb is a simple process. Here's a brief overview of what happens during an FTTC installation.
An nbn® approved technician will visit your premises to install the Network Connection Device (NCD) inside, connecting it to your existing phone socket. The fibre runs to a Distribution Point Unit (DPU) in your street. This process typically does not require any trenching or major civil works at your property.
Our team will coordinate with you and nbn® to schedule the installation at your convenience.
